ABOUT THE YORKTOWN
The USS Yorktown is one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers built during WWII for the US Navy and was named after the Battle of Yorktown of the American Revolutionary War. She is 890 feet in length, weighs more than 30,000 tons, and has multiple airplane hangar bays that provide over 40,000 square feet of indoor space. Commissioned in 1943, she participated in several campaigns in the Pacific Theater of Operations, earning 11 battle stars and the Presidential Unit Citation. Later, she served as a recovery ship for the Apollo 8 space mission and was used in the movie Tora! Tora! Tora! which recreated the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Finally, she was decommissioned in 1970 and became a museum ship in 1975 at Patriot’s Point (in Mt Pleasant, SC). She is now a national historic landmark and once a year is transformed into Charleston’s premier New Year’s Eve event.
